Eternal Sonata follows many typical roleplaying conventions with the player controlling a party of up to twelve characters set on a journey to explore the world, talking with its inhabitants, buy and sell equipment at shops, and encounter terrrifying beasts.The main combat system is turn-based, using only 3 characters within the party, but also incorporates elements of an action game. Each character's turn is preceded by "Tactical Time", where players will choose the character's course of action is the battle. Once the player initiates an action the clock starts and a limited amount of time is given to move the character, attack the enemy, and use recovery skills or items.
